Introduction to Ultraviolet Radiation and How to Protect the Eye Against It (#UVR) 4 Credits ABO/3 Credits, FL
Course Description: The purpose of this course is to present the effects of exposure of the eye to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and to provide information to establish ocular protection against ultraviolet exposure. To accomplish this goal, the course discusses the electromagnetic spectrum, anatomy of the eye, the UVR transmittance of the eye, the sun as a radiant energy source, the ozone story, and the effects of exposure of the eye to UVR. The clinical significance of UV exposure, demographics of UV exposure and how to protect the eye to insure safe exposure provide the optician with information to use in the design of protection for the eye. Instructional Objectives: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: a) Understand the electromagnetic spectrum and its use in solving ocular problems. b) Understand solar radiation and how changes in the ozone layer affects the solar radiation falling on earth. c) Gain a basic understanding of the anatomy of the eye. d) Understand the effects of the exposure of the eye to UVR. e) Understand how demographics has served to increase the exposure of the human to UVR. f) Counsel the patient and explain why ocular protection is necessary against UVR. g) Design ophthalmic devices which will provide protection against UVR and will provide maximum visual performance in UV-rich environments. |
