Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are pandemic. HIV is the name of the virus that causes the infection. AIDS is a severe immunological disorder caused by the retrovirus HIV. HIV causes a defect in cell-mediated immune response that is manifested by increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections and to certain rare cancers, such as Kaposi’s sarcoma. It is transmitted primarily by exposure to contaminated body fluids, especially blood and semen. Most new infections globally are transmitted heterosexually, although risk factors vary. In some countries, men who have sex with men, injecting drug users, and sex workers are at significant risk.
