Statements made about standards today receive whimsical reactions. The media charges into many of these statements with hysteria and the consumer and the consumer providers are left to wonder. This lesson provides a historical background to the agencies charged with developing these standards. The history shows the development of various standards primarily related to safety for the consumer and its response to possible hazard in its use.
Dates of action on certain standards are presented with recommendations for use. The ‘handout’ version of the ANSI standard is listed and then presented in an easy to study “bookcase” format. Specific comments regarding ANSI’s recommendations are repeated several times in the lesson. Reference is made to ANSI investigating the fabrication of the product as well as the product itself. The lesson closes with the most recent ANSI standards on fabrication and their tolerances.
The content of the lesson is hoped to enhance the knowledge of the optician and provide a greater level of care quality to the consumer.
